ComicScene Review: DUI Drawn Under The Influence 3

The postman arrived late. He bought me a copy of DUI which was great service seeing as I just paid for one online this morning. This must be the preview copy editor Eamonn Clarke offered me. Which was nice.

£3 from each issue is going to Mind, which supports mental health for everyone. It’s produced in association with the Awesome Comics Podcast, which I save up and listen to during my three hour journey in the car to work in the Highlands a couple of times a month. Ian Ashcroft provides cover art.

An anthology – the third – a mix of regular creators and newbies who have appeared in some of our own publications (Atomic and ComicScene gets a mention, which was a surprise – we get everywhere!)

Like all anthologies I have my favourites but I do like the fact that most creators in this 64 page comic have four or less pages to tell their story, which is difficult to do.

My favourites include Cliff Cumber Soon Nothing, the art of Jason Garrattley (no idea what is going on but I like it), Vince and Dan’s Neighbourhood Watch is the most accomplished story, Content Provider by Ed Whitting and Susie Gander is a close second to that, Waiting by A Henderson and Mike Aston as I can relate to the ‘box’ they never tell you about in GQ magazine, Bear Boy made me laugh, Mother Metamorphosis art by Eva Ashcroft was lovely as was Gareth A Hopkins art in Waveless, Orianna and the Canyon art by JWC art was a joy too, David Robertson slice of life was a cracker and Monkey House by Dave Hingley was an enjoyable end to the proceedings. That’s not too say I didn’t enjoy the others, these were just the stand outs for me.

Overall a great anthology but the fact that funds are going to MIND should convince you to give it a go. You can find the link in ComicScene Newsagent here.
