ComicScene Magazine are cancelling their awards for 2020.
Publisher Tony Foster said, “We started doing initial prep work for this years awards after a successful launch in 2019. We began by cancelling the ComicCon Award and replacing it with a Best Covid-19 project and had hoped to have a ceremony in Edinburgh late November. As time has gone on we felt it wouldn’t be fair to run the whole awards this year and with November Comic Events now cancelling felt an event would be inappropriate too.”
However all is not lost, as Tony explains, “We may come back to nominations for Best Covid-19 initiatives later in the year but for now we are asking comic fans to tell us their Best Comic Character ever and their Favourite Comic of All Time. You can provide your three top character and comic title here. The result will be announced later in the year and voting closes 31st July.”
The voting will help determine the future content of the History of Comics 1930-2030 which runs on Kickstarter until 30th July here.
Tony continues, “ComicScene Magazine has seen a major financial impact from Covid-19 and we have to adapt to that impact. Lockdown has also given us time to plan what we see as a changing future landscape for retail, magazines and comics. We have to assess our intentions pre-Covid 19, loss of sales due to Covid-19 on issue 12 and get Issue 13, the 70 Years of Eagle and Dan Dare edition delayed from 9th April, into stores. We are also taking on board suggestions by our readership and taking a unique opportunity to change what we do accordingly. We have planned a new way of covering Independents, ensuring a deeper look at the rich history of both U.K. and US comic history, avoiding comic reprints and producing new comics and finally encouraging kids to read comics whilst continuing to support schools, libraries, creators and comic shops too. A dedicated and collectable ‘History of Comics’ Partwork is the first of those changes with more news to be announced over the next couple of weeks. Everyone pledging to our kickstarter will help those future projects become a reality and we value your much needed support.”
