Pick of the Weeks Comic Books – 9 Jan

It’s NEW COMIC BOOK DAY.  Get down to your favourite Comic Book Store and try these little beauties.  There’s so many books to choose from, but these are a few of the stand out titles for ComicScene Magazine this week.

KELLY THOMPSON and CARMEN CARNERO take on Captain Marvel just before the movie hits cinemas in March.  As Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers has spent months in space protecting Earth from alien threats big and small, but now it’s time for Earth’s mightiest hero to come home. New York City has never looked so good. But every re-entry comes with the unexpected, and Carol is about to hit a whole lot of unexpected.

With the Justice League frozen by Gamma Gong tech, Earth ends up on the auction block, and Volgar Zo hosts a menagerie of the universe’s deadliest despots and criminals.  Hal Jordan leads a squad of Lanterns into the fray-and someone’s going to pay the ultimate price before this case gets closed.  By Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp, both creators are top of their game with this one.

Lets Dance!  Set in the shady New York City music scene of the mid-80s, GUNNING FOR HITS stars Martin Mills, a record company talent scout with an inscrutable past. Follow Martin as he attempts to sign a rock band that’ll conquer the world in this music business.  Written by JEFF ROUGVIE, art by MORITAT (The Spirit, Harley Quinn, Hellblazer). Plus a Spotify playlist with each issue.

Edison Crane heads to a military base in Australia to investigate otherworldly apparitions the government can’t explain. Meanwhile, a long-dormant evil is rising, and Crane will have to unlock secrets hidden deep in the Kremlin vaults before it’s too late. Prodigy Issue 2 by MARK MILLAR and RAFAEL ALBUQUERQUE.

Following their graphic novel MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES, ED BRUBAKER and SEAN PHILLIPS finally return ‘Criminal’
Teeg Lawless is back in town. But he finds himself in more trouble than ever, thanks to his delinquent teenage son-and this time, fists and bullets may not be enough to solve his problems.

The Thirteenth Doctor’s first comic adventure continues with writer Jody Houser, artist Rachael Stott and colourist Enrica Angiolini.  The Doctor and her new companions square off against a rival time traveller – one who seems all too human…

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE writer KIERON GILLEN and STEPHANIE HANS bring you ‘Die’ a pitch-black fantasy where a group of forty-something adults have to deal with the returning unearthly horror they barely survived as teenage role-players.

Spider-Man is the worst neighbour EVER! There are always crazy villains and property damage and drama and he tries to fix the damage and he helps carry your groceries and actually that property damage keeps the rents down. This book will give you a closer look at Spider-Man’s neighbourhood than any book ever. Writer TOM TAYLOR and by JUANN CABAL.
