ComicScene Review: The Bogie Man

The Bogie Man The InComplete Files is here. I’d heard rumours this was coming back from various sources and a number of potential publishers. In the end Hatman Press delivered it to us, with Kickstarter help from The77 team.

The reproduction of Robin Smiths black and white art is truly amazing and it’s nice to see all the stories he drew (including a new one) altogether for the first time. I assume the missing story is by Cam Kennedy, but my memory is a little hazy on this.

I read Alan Grant and John Wagners original comic series, largely because it was published by people from my favourite comic shop in Glasgow. It was then, as it is now, a hoot!

At first I was a little confused why you would need a glossary of terms. Reading through it again I can see why some may find the language difficult. You may lose some of the humour if you don’t hear the language daily in the mother tongue, glossary or no glossary. You may even wince at some of the depictions of characters but, believe me, ‘Still Game’ humour is still alive and well on the streets of Glasgow and we all love the banter!

Originally released in City of Culture 1990 (Glasgow was jumpin’) you can still recognise many of the sights and sounds of Glasgow and Edinburgh, even if (along with Dan Quayle) the likes of Tower Records, Rogano (I think!) and Burtons have long since gone.

Page for page you get more bang for your buck than comics today. The writing is tight but the action and humour flows page after page. Today the action sequences might get a larger panel here and there but the story loses nothing from it.

I certainly read the first Bogie Man story. I am sure I bought everything from Tundra publishing but can’t recall Chinatoon. I would have overlooked the Rebellion years so the majority of this book was new to me, hence why I picked it up.

It was fun while it lasted doll but it’s time to get on the train to no-where’s-ville with me and my frozen turkey. Once we find out where you can pick up a copy we will add it to Newsagent.
