First Men on Mars #1 is the first issue of a steampunk adventure in the tradition of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burrough’s John Carter series. You may have seen a preview in Shift 7 (available in newsagents now alongside Brawler Special).

The year is 1890. Lady Lilian Wells-Cavendish arrives at a British Army camp in the heart of Africa and begins an investigation into a failed British military expedition to Mars.  First Men on Mars revolves around this operation and its survivors’ conflicting testimonies. By unravelling these accounts, Lady Wells-Cavendish is able to uncover an incredible tale of not only dragon-riding Martians, shambling plantmen, wartomatons, flying machines and battery-powered tanks, but also an altogether unexpected threat that awaits the mission to Mars….

Events on Earth are drawn by Gary Erskine (Captain America, Star Wars, Doctor Who) and each of the survivors’ stories are drawn by Simon Fraser (Nikolai Dante, Hershey, Judge Dredd), Mike Collins (Doctor Who, MARVEL Comics, His Dark Materials, The Witcher ) and Paul McCaffrey (Anno Dracula, Adler, Captain Scarlet).  First Men on Mars is coloured by Yel Zamor (MARVEL Comics, Dark Horse, Titan Comics, Archie) and John-Paul Bove (Transformers, GI Joe, TMNT) and lettered by Annie Parkhouse (2000AD, Judge Dredd, Renegade Arts).

Written by Paul L. Mathews and based on a concept by Paul L. Mathews and Accent U.K.’s Dave West, First Men On Mars #1 is the first issue of a limited series, with subsequent issues scheduled to appear on Kickstarter in 2022.  Pledge here

The 77 Annual is now fully funded here as is Killtopia 4, GlassCity 2, Bomb Scares 3 and Voodoo Chile.

Ian Richardson has been a professional comic book artist since 2001, with his first published work appearing in 2000AD on a Sinister Dexter story with Dan Abnett.  Since then he has worked on an impressive plethora of titles: Image’s Noble Causes; Platinum’s Cowboys & Aliens; the Marvel UK line of Captain America, The Falcon, Doctor Doom, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Luke Cage, and Modok; Dark Horse’s Halo:Escalation series; Zenescope’s Grimm Fairy Tales; Unlikely Heroes Studios’ The Unthinkables; and, of course, he continues to work on Judge Dredd and similar titles for 2000AD to this day!  A kickstarter of his work is still available here
