What is your earliest comic memory?

Reading my uncles’ old comic books, that were left at my granny’s house. I’d visit every week and get lost in their collection, which consisted mostly of books from the 50’s and early 60’s. Titles included Oor Willie, the Broons, Tintin, Superman, Dennis the Menace, the Beezer and others.

What was the last comic you read and enjoyed?

I was a little late to the party, but I just finished the last book in the original Kick Ass run, which was superb and, at times, laugh-out-loud funny. A great series of books, in which KA2 felt a little out of place, but the rest were the best stuff I’ve read since the 80’s. Great fun.

What work are you most proud of and why?

My first graphic novel, MILK. It’s the most playful book I’ve worked on, both as a writer and artist. It’s a pure exploration of the medium, with no commercial end goal in mind. It’s just me trying to learn how to draw comics, out of the sheer love of it.

Who do you thank for your career/interest in comics and who was your biggest influence?

Morris Heggie was editor of the Dandy when I submitted work to them and he gave me my first break into the world of comics. It was a pleasure to work with him for many years, on some fantastic projects. My biggest influences, artistically, are Herge, Winsor McCay, Dudley D Watkins, Barry Windsor Smith and Frank Miller. All of them made me want to do this for a living, too…even as a pale comparison.

What are you working on now?

I’ve just finished writing a graphic novel about the Tattoo Fox and am at the stage of trying to get funding for it. I’ve also just finished writing my first movie screenplay and will be trying to get that read by producers and agents.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Buy shares of Apple.

What five comics would you take to an orbiting space station with you and why?

The Dark Knight 1-4 and the X-Men #205. The DK because it’s the best 4 comic book run ever and the X-Men because that is the single best ever issue of (superhero) comic book art ever drawn.

What graphic novel would you take and why?

The Watchmen. Because is so very good, and there’s so much of it!
