Welcome to our new article on ComicScene – Space Station Comics. It’s like Desert Island Discs in space. If you’d like to take part then email us at comicsceneuk@gmail.com

This week we spoke to Dan Cornwell, artist on Rok of the Reds which comtinues in the Judge Dredd Megazine.

What is your earliest comic memory?

Possibly Old Joke Book Book by Allan Ahlberg and Janet Ahlberg, though that may not be regarded as a comic? That, along with Tintin – which I love, Spiderman when he got the black costume, Secret Wars, wasn’t it?

What was the last comic you read and enjoyed?

Transformers by Daniel Warren Johnson. 2000ad, obviously.

What work are you most proud of and why?

The next one I’m working on.

Who do you thank for your career/interest in comics and who was your biggest influence?

2000ad, and every artist and writer that has been in there. Biggest influences? That’s a long list. All of them.

What are you working on now?

I’ve just finished a Judge Dredd by Ken Niemand for the Judge Dredd Megazine, and I’m currently working on another Dredd for 2000ad. Also, I’m working on the third book of Rok with John Wagner and another Dredd with Niemand in the works. Busy busy.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Never give up. Age is irrelevant. You can achieve your dreams at any age. If you work hard, anything, ANYTHING is possible.

What five comics would you take to an orbiting space station with you?

Judge Dredd – Necropolis. It’s the best Dredd next to America. Slaine – The Horned God. Bisley at his best. Judge Dredd – The Complete Case Files 5. Wagner, Ezquerra, Bolland, McMahon and Dillon. Need I say why? All-Star Superman. Frank Quitely genius. Akira – all of them. Otomo, huge influence on me. I’d squeeze these in too.. Blacksad – any of them. Just beautiful books and wonderful stories and any number of 2000ad collections, including Sky Chariots.

What graphic novel would you take?

Damn, I answered that above. Does that count? I think there may be a weight limit? I’d pop in Judge Dredd – Die Laughing. Love Jim Murray’s art.

Anything you’d like to share with us before you go?

New Rok series is coming, and obviously, the two previous series are running in the Megazine.

Thanks for your time Dan.
