Death is a character was first published in the DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. One of the Endless that also include Dream (the Sandman), Despair, Desire, Destiny, Delirium and Destruction.
In The Sandman comics, Death plays a recurring role, often in a kind, supportive and nurturing capacity. She is introduced as a friendly and empathetic figure, offering comfort to those passing away. She serves as a contrast to Dream, her sibling, who is more aloof, distant and often preoccupied with his own responsibilities.
In the fantastic 1993 graphic novel Death The High Cost of Living, which features in this compact edition, Death is given a day living as a human to better understand the lives of mortals. This story explores themes of mortality, the value of life, and the relationship between life and death. Her philosophy that “Everyone dies, but it’s not so bad” encourages readers to think about death in a less fearful and more understanding light.
