ComicScene Review: Scream!

I am a big fan of everything new from Rebellion and picking up Scream! 40 Years of Terror was a no brainer for me, albeit the DaNi cover, whilst not a disaster by any means, doesn’t immediately draw you in.

We kick off with a stormer from Alex Paknadel and art by Alejandro Aragon. It is ‘The Dracula Files’ being brought bang up to date – vampires meets Line of Duty with a cover up thrown in for good measure and I loved it.

A black and white ‘Thirteenth Floor’ mixes horror, kids and a happy ending that would have suited a copy of Regened and is quickly followed by an art style by Anna Readman that would suit 1970’s underground US comics. That suits the script ‘And His Skin Is Cold’ by Redman and George Pooley in a truly rock, and indeed roll, story with a grotesque twist at the end.

VV Glass brings us the final story ‘Inverted Burial’ and as writer and artist this feels accomplished. You have to work hard to finish the story as it is very subtle, particularly as you have to work out the visual end.

All in all four strong stories makes ip a modern Halloween treat that may well give you a thirst for the retro offerings advertised at the end.
