Oxford Comics Network is back in January 2024, delving once again into the mysteries of sequential art. Over the coming term they will be hosting four online talks from respected academics across the world of comics. You can get tickets here
Their upcoming sessions (with UK times) are:
· Adult to Child Violence in British Comics of the 1970s: Dr Robert Hagan (Manchester Metropolitan University). Tuesday 30 Jan 5pm
· Graphic Depictions of New Motherhood: Dorothee Marx MA (Christian-Albrechts-Universität, Kiel). Tuesday 6 Feb, 5pm
· Chris Ware: Art, Empathy and Connection: Prof. Martha Kuhlman (Bryant University, Rhode Island). Tuesday 20 Feb, 5pm
· How Comics Travel: Translation, Publication, Radical Literacies (or possibly another topic – she knows a lot!): Kate Kelp-Stebbins (Director, Comics Studies Program, University of Oregon). Tuesday 5 March, 5pm
All their events are free, hosted online, and include both a lecture and opportunities for questions and discussion. They are partnering with the Lakes International Comic Arts Festival (LICAF), the only comics festival in the UK to receive funding from the Arts Council. LICAF is dedicated to the development of comics in literacy, environmentalism and international culture, and also runs an annual academic festival, Comics Up Close.
Wherever you are in the world, and whatever your interest in comics, you’re welcome to join. The 5pm UK start means it’s a lunchtime treat in New York, a book at bedtime in Delhi, and a 9am pre-office mental workout in LA. Booking is essential.
