Quindrie Press are based in Scotland under the watchful eye of Eve Greenwood. They utilise largely Scottish based creators with marginalised and European sensibilities and have tapped into a successful Kickstarter groove with their two collections, on a par with ShortBox and the works of Simon Birks.
Their 2021 collection raised almost £40,000 for their four book collection and this time round, in 2023, they raised just over £20,000. Not as much but not to be sniffed at as this hopefully still means a hearty payment for the creators.
My personal favourite of the four is the ‘Witching Hour’ by Beth Fuller. This is beautifully illustrated and captures fantasy and a simple slice of life in equal measure. This is a theme which flows through all four books. The only negatives here is an easy to miss edit (being picky!) and it would have been a lovely book to see on oversize rather than the small and petite manga size pages.

‘Flesh and Flora’ is up next. A slice of Sci Fi and survival which has no winners at the end. Again, as in all the books, the art is pretty strong and as most of these books are written by the artists with not too overindulgent illustrations to take away from the story.

‘Find A Seat’ by Faye Stacey sets itself up for a standard break up story but ends with a weird train journey in which Death pops up and gambles the main characters life with a computer game. At least he/she didn’t offer a sandwich from the buffet car as their survival option.

Finally ‘Catharsis’ by Ell J Walker is like a bat out of hell as a demon is summoned and starts singing songs our lead character, Dimitri, is unsure to sing himself. He needs to buckle up quick and face his fears to save, well, everyone while getting the girl before the end credits.
These books (and Quindrie Press) tap into modern day indie comic readers looking for new talent. Indeed their sales suggest they are more mainstream than indie comics based on traditional U.K. and US comics. This is a good thing, adding great books to the vibrant collective interested in the comic medium out there. Get out of your comfort zone and buy these books here.
