ComicScene Review: Judge Dredd Megazine 459

The Megazine is firing on all cylinders at the moment.

Since dropping bagged covers we can now enjoy eye popping cover illustrations and Dylan Teague provides cover duties while Mike Carroll and Nicole Assirelli bring us an enjoyable one off Dredd after the old One Eyed Jack epic of the last few issues.

It’s great to see John Wagner on top form with ‘Spector’ – nobody does black humour that made 2000AD better than John. Coupled with great art from Dan Cornwell.

I’m all for teasers for the Treasury of British Comics and extended interviews with creators that would not be out of place in back issues of ComicScene. However the black and white old school new stories from Ken Niemand is a nice retro filled addition to Dredd and the Megazine. I look forward to the Action meets Megazine mash up in future issues.

If you collect everything 2000AD then perhaps the reprints of Rogue Trooper and Johnny Red are not new to you. They are new to me, which provides a hefty packages of strips that I’ve never seen before for my £6.99 entrance fee. But ‘Lawless’ and ‘Dreadnoughts’ are new strips that in years to come may be regarded as classics so well worth a look if you are impatient for the collections that will no doubt follow.

What’s missing for your average comic fan? Maybe a Manga influenced Dredd you can read from the back page would attract some teen readers to the Meg. I can’t really fault this title. It’s the comic magazine I want to read and each issue is currently a joy.
