I read this in the runway at Dublin airport in the ComicScene Digital Library.
Well this was a smashing Easter Egg. Three stories; as it says “adventures in the 18th century” Flintlock, Shanti and the Clockwork Cavalier.
As author Steve Tanner says “You’ll notice the artwork is black and white – this is very much intentional. In part Flintlock was inspired by the British weekly comics of the sixties and seventies, many of which featured historical adventure stories with terrific black and white artwork!”
He’s not wrong, this was a cracking read, lovely artwork; Lady Flintlock a blatantly female highwayman and aristocrat, this had element from the Scarlet Pimpernel and even Carry On Dick, there was a real “Saturday teatime tv” feel to it.
Shanti – a female pirate captain – fighting slavers and freeing slaves, a cracking story
Finally was the Clockwork Cavalier Robot Archie meets the Bow Street runners and Oliver Twist. This story was told from an interesting angle and better for it. A bit of history and sci-fi this was for me the best story in the pack.
10/10
